occurring in year 2001 with comparisons to 207 Post-Reform Act cases
settled during 1996-2000. [1]

Overall
median and average settlement sizes declined in 2001, compared with
prior Post-Reform Act settlements. However, the distribution of
settlement values was similar to that of Post-Reform Act settlements
in prior years, with settlements most frequently ranging from $1
million to less than $5 million.
In spite of the increase in extremely large settlements in recent
years, for cases settling in 2001 and for all Post-Reform Act cases
settled to date, over 65% of the settlements have totaled less than
$10 million.
